Regenerative farming improves coffee yields in Uganda’s Masaka

Masaka: Robusta coffee yields in Uganda’s Masaka region are rising after a pilot program introduced regenerative agriculture to tackle drought and erratic rains.

Backed by the Global Environment Facility, Nespresso, and IUCN, the project set up 30 model farms to train local growers in techniques like mulching, cover cropping, and planting drought-resistant seedlings.

Farmers report healthier trees, better yields, and more stable incomes.
“Since we applied mulches and planted drought resistant seedlings, the coffee farms are reliably resilient,” said smallholder Nakalisa Mary Fatuma.

Organizers say the success could help make Uganda’s coffee sector more climate-resilient amid rising global coffee prices.
