Record-breaking space launches in 2025: India’s ISSAR report highlights growing space activity

A record 315 successful space launches were conducted globally in 2025, with approximately 4,651 objects placed in orbit, according to the Indian Space Situational Assessment Report (ISSAR) for 2025. The report, released on Wednesday, highlights the significant growth in space activity, with a maximum number of payloads deployed during the year.

The ISSAR report states that 4,651 objects were launched into orbits, while 1,911 re-entered the atmosphere, resulting in a net annual growth of 74.5%. This growth underscores the increasing congestion in space, particularly in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

India contributed to this growth, with eight Indian satellites and four rocket bodies placed in orbit in 2025. The report emphasizes the need for effective space debris management and sustainable space operations.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is taking proactive steps to address these challenges, including the development of the NEtwork for space object TRacking and Analysis (NETRA) project and the announcement of a Debris-Free Space Mission by 2030.
