Rare-disease drugs could be India’s next pharma frontier
India makes affordable generics for the world — next could be rare-disease drugs, experts say. Currently most orphan drugs are imported and cost crores. A proposal in The Hindu suggests the government should de-risk manufacturing with tax breaks, PLI incentives, tech transfer support, and assured buying through Centres of Excellence for Rare Diseases and Jan Aushadhi Kendras.
With streamlined regulation and assured demand, India could build a globally competitive sector and make rare-disease treatment accessible — not just affordable.
