Rare ‘Blue Micromoon’ to grace sunday night sky, NASA says

Stargazers will have a chance to catch a rare lunar double-feature this weekend: a calendar blue moon that is also a micromoon. The event is set for Sunday, May 31, 2026, according to NASA and science experts.

A calendar blue moon — the second full moon in a single month — typically occurs only once every two to three years. The last one was on August 30, 2023.Sunday’s full moon will also be a micromoon, meaning the Moon is at its farthest point from Earth in its orbit. As a result, it will appear slightly smaller and dimmer than a typical full moon, though scientists say the difference is unlikely to be noticeable to the naked eye.

Despite the name, the moon won’t actually look blue. The term refers to the rarity of the timing, not the color. The full moon reaches peak illumination on Sunday night.
