Visakhapattanam: State-owned miner NMDC has selected Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) to build a nearly ₹3,000 crore iron ore blending yard in Visakhapatnam, as part of its plan to launch branded iron ore.
RVNL said last week in a regulatory filing that it received a letter of award from NMDC for setting up buffer stockpiles and a blending yard at Vizag. The facility will have capacity to handle 10 million tonnes per annum.
The contract is valued at ₹2,977 crore. RVNL has 42 months to execute the project.
The Vizag yard is key to NMDC’s strategy for branded iron ore. Blending allows the miner to mix different grades of ore to meet specific quality and chemistry requirements of steelmakers, improving consistency and pricing power.
NMDC’s move comes as steel demand grows and buyers increasingly seek customized ore blends.
