NIMHANS and IIIT Hyderabad launch first open-access Asian sleep database for stroke patients
Researchers from NIMHANS, Bengaluru, and the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, have developed the first open-access Asian database of overnight sleep studies in patients with ischemic stroke.
The database compiles overnight sleep study data from stroke survivors and has now been made publicly available for researchers worldwide.
Experts say the resource will support new research on sleep disorders in stroke patients, an area that has been under-studied in the Asian population. Sleep problems like sleep apnea and insomnia are common after ischemic stroke and can affect recovery, rehabilitation, and overall quality of life.
By providing free access to this data, the team aims to help scientists better understand the link between stroke and sleep disturbances, develop improved screening tools, and design better post-stroke care protocols tailored to Asian patients.
Officials noted that this is the first such open-access dataset from Asia, and it is expected to accelerate research and collaboration in neurology and sleep medicine.
The database is now available for researchers, clinicians, and institutions working on stroke rehabilitation and sleep health.
