New gecko species discovered in Tripura named after researcher’s mentor

Guwahati: A team of researchers has identified a new species of bent-toed gecko in Tripura, adding to the herpetofauna records of the Northeast.

The species, named Cyrtodactylus jayadityai, was recorded in lowland forest patches of North Tripura district. Genetic analysis showed a significant divergence from its closest known relative, Cyrtodactylus tripuraensis.

The gecko is named after the researchers’ mentor. The discovery expands the known diversity of Cyrtodactylus in the region, which has emerged as a hotspot for bent-toed gecko species in recent years.

The finding underscores the ecological importance of Tripura’s lowland forests and the need for continued field surveys and habitat protection.
