‘Moondram Pirai’: Kamal-Sridevi Classic Hits Amazon Prime, Rekindles Kollywood Nostalgia
Chennai: This summer’s brutal heatwave has an unexpected companion — a wave of Kollywood nostalgia. As re-released hits like Amaidhipadai and Amarkalam pull crowds back to theatres, the real showstopper for film lovers is landing on streaming: Balu Mahendra’s Moondram Pirai, now digitally remastered in 4K on Amazon Prime.
Widely regarded as one of Tamil cinema’s finest, the 1982 classic features Kamal Haasan and Sridevi in career-defining performances. Directed with quiet brilliance by Balu Mahendra, the film swept both critics and the box office. In Madras, it ran to packed houses for an entire year.
Its 1983 Hindi remake Sadma became a cult phenomenon and is known to be a personal favourite of former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani.
The remaster restores Ilaiyaraaja’s haunting score and Mahendra’s luminous visuals, giving a new generation access to the film while letting longtime fans relive it as they remember it — only sharper, cleaner, and more immersive.
