Meta to start making ‘Iris’ AI chip in September, targets 14GW computing

Meta Platforms will begin production of its custom AI chip “Iris” in September, an internal memo shows, as the company looks to scale computing power to 14 gigawatts in 2027.

Iris is the first chip in Meta’s MTIA — Meta Training and Inference Accelerators — a four-generation in-house silicon project. The goal is to run AI models that power Facebook, Instagram, and other Meta products more efficiently.

Meta designed Iris for its specific workloads and partnered with Broadcom for chip design and TSMC for manufacturing.

The company said it has also locked in multi-year supply deals to expand data center infrastructure to meet growing AI demand.

Custom chips like Iris help tech companies optimize performance for recommendation algorithms, ad targeting, and generative AI, while reducing dependence on external chipmakers.

The September production start marks Meta’s most concrete step yet in building its own AI hardware stack.
