Meta signs deal for space-based solar power to run data centres by 2030

Meta Platforms has signed an agreement with Overview Energy to secure power from the startup’s space-based solar energy system for the Facebook parent’s data centres by the end of the decade.

Overview Energy is developing infrastructure that collects solar energy in orbit and beams it to ground facilities for round-the-clock power generation. The system avoids nighttime and weather interruptions that limit traditional solar farms.

An initial orbital demonstration is expected in 2028, with commercial power delivery slated for 2030, the companies said.

The deal gives Meta a path to 24/7 renewable energy for its energy-intensive data centres, as tech firms race to match AI growth with clean power. If successful, Overview Energy’s approach would mark one of the first commercial applications of space-based solar power.
