Marvel Tōkon: Big effects, bigger fights, back in arcades

Los Angeles: For years, fighting game fans have been waiting for the return of a big, screen-filling arcade brawler in the vein of Marvel vs Capcom. In the 1990s, Marvel vs Capcom defined the genre with its flashy special effects and crossover roster of X-Men and Marvel characters. It was as fun to watch crowds gather around the arcade cabinet as it was to play.

That style of tag-based spectacle seemed like a pipe dream for a long time. But the first reveal of Marvel Tōkon suggests the wait may be over.

Developer Arc System Works has brought back the signature spectator appeal of the ‘90s fighter, while also building a game that is surprisingly accessible, technically proficient, and challenging. The new title is a tag-based fighter that leans into large-scale effects and fast team swaps, aiming to stand out in an already crowded fighting game market.

Early impressions point to Marvel Tōkon delivering enough impact to punch up and beyond current competitors, offering both the nostalgia of crowded arcade days and modern systems for new players to jump in.Release details for Marvel Tōkon have not yet been announced.
