Indian Railways boosts safety and efficiency with telecom and digital infrastructure upgrade

The Ministry of Railways has announced significant progress in strengthening its telecom and digital infrastructure, focusing on safety, operational efficiency, and passenger experience. Key achievements include the upgrade of the Unified Telecom Backbone Infrastructure using Internet Protocol Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP MPLS) technology, enabling centralized accessibility of video surveillance and supporting core railway systems.

The IP MPLS network has been commissioned at 1,396 railway stations, marking a major step towards a digitally integrated railway ecosystem. Additionally, the Video Surveillance System (VSS) has been expanded across 1,874 railway stations, equipped with AI-based Video Analytics for automated detection of events like intrusion and loitering, and Facial Recognition Software for real-time identification.

“These cameras will be the eyes of the system, and AI will be its brain,” said Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighting the transformative role of artificial intelligence in strengthening railway security. The upgrades support critical systems like Mobile Train Radio Communication, Passenger Reservation System, and Freight Operations Information System, enhancing overall operational efficiency and passenger experience.
