Indian LPG tanker ‘Green Asha’ safely transits Strait of Hormuz amid tensions

The India-flagged LPG tanker Green Asha has safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz, carrying around 20,000 tonnes of LPG, under tight Iranian oversight. This is the ninth Indian vessel to navigate the critical waterway since the West Asia conflict began.

The transit highlights India’s reliance on the Strait of Hormuz for essential fuel supplies, with 40% of crude oil, over 50% of LNG, and 90% of LPG imports passing through it. The Indian Navy’s Operation Urja Suraksha is escorting tankers through the volatile region to ensure uninterrupted passage. The Green Asha’s journey is significant, given India’s annual LPG consumption of over 33 million tonnes, with imports covering 60% of demand. India’s energy security depends on safe passage through this chokepoint, making the successful transit a relief for the country’s energy needs.
