India-born cheetah gives birth to four cubs in Kuno National Park
A major conservation milestone has been achieved in India, with an India-born cheetah giving birth to four adorable cubs in the wild at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. This brings India’s total cheetah population to 57, marking a significant boost to the country’s efforts to reintroduce the species, which was declared extinct in 1952.
The cubs, born to a 25-month-old female cheetah and daughter of South African cheetah Gamini, are the first recorded birth in the open forest since Project Cheetah’s launch in 2022. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav hailed this as a “historic moment”, highlighting the success of conservation efforts and the cheetahs’ adaptation to Indian conditions.
This achievement showcases the dedication of wildlife managers, veterinarians, and field staff involved in the project. The mother cheetah and her cubs are healthy and under close monitoring.
