India aims to boost fisheries sector with reservoir development initiatives
The Indian government is set to undertake initiatives for the integrated development of fisheries in 500 reservoirs and Amrit Sarovars, as announced in Budget 2026-27. This move aims to enhance the income of fish farmers and strengthen market access by supporting fish farmer-producer organisations and cooperatives.
India is already the second-largest fish producer in the world and the second-largest aquacultural producer globally. The application of cage culture technology has contributed significantly to the country’s rise in fish production.
The development of fisheries in reservoirs and Amrit Sarovars is expected to provide a boost to the sector, creating new opportunities for fish farmers and improving their livelihoods. By strengthening market access and supporting fish farmer-producer organisations, the government aims to promote sustainable growth in the fisheries sector.
