Gujarat tops India in okra production, Saurashtra-Kutch drives horticulture growth

Rajkot: Gujarat has emerged as the country’s leading producer of okra, with the Saurashtra–Kutch region increasingly positioning itself as a major growth engine for horticulture ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) 2026 to be held in Rajkot, officials said on Monday.

According to the Director of Horticulture, Gujarat, the State ranked first in India during 2023–24 both in terms of area under okra cultivation and overall production.

Okra was cultivated across 93,955 hectares in Gujarat, with a total production of 11.68 lakh tonnes. Of this, the Saurashtra–Kutch region accounted for nearly 15% of the cultivated area and about 13% of total production.

The figures highlight the region’s rising role in horticulture as Gujarat prepares to showcase investment opportunities at VGRC 2026 in Rajkot. Officials said crop diversification and improved farming practices have contributed to the state’s lead in okra output.
