Grace and precision: Chitra Lakshumanan captivates at HCL concert series
Chennai: The HCL Concert Series at The Music Academy featured a solo Bharatanatyam recital by Chitra Lakshumanan, disciple of Srekala Bharath, that drew applause for both technical clarity and storytelling.
Dressed in a vibrant green and red costume, Chitra opened with a shlokam on Muruga, moving into Shadakshara Kouthuvam in raga Shanmukhapriya and Rupaka tala. The piece, composed by Madurai R. Muralidaran, highlighted her precise hand movements and sharp footwork, giving the performance grace and stability.
She followed with Mandooka Shabdam in Ragamalika and Misra Chapu, a Tanjore Quartet composition that tells the story of a frog seeking divine intervention. The choreography, by K. G. Sarasa, guru of Srekala Bharath, allowed Chitra’s sensitive interpretation to bring out the emotional core of the narrative.
The recital reflected the lineage of her training while showcasing her own command over rhythm and abhinaya, adding another memorable evening to the HCL Concert Series lineup.
