Global ocean protection surges forward: 10% milestone achieved!

The world is celebrating a major win for ocean conservation! Over 10% of the global ocean is now officially protected, covering a massive 5 million square kilometers – that’s larger than the European Union. This incredible milestone is a testament to the power of global cooperation and commitment to preserving our planet’s most vital resource.

“Over half of the world’s oxygen is produced by life in the ocean,” said Neville Ash, director of UNEP’s World Conservation Monitoring Centre. “This is a moment for celebration, and a reminder of the progress we’re making towards a healthier planet”.

Countries like Indonesia and Thailand have led the charge, adding hundreds of new marine and coastal protected areas. But there’s still work to be done – the goal is to protect 30% of Earth’s land and sea by 2030.
