Former IAF officer flags need to prioritize new mothers’ mental health
Former Indian Air Force officer Anjani Mishra says becoming a full-time mother was harder than serving in the armed forces, after she was diagnosed with clinical depression following childbirth.
Now a life coach, she says families should watch for warning signs like withdrawal, frequent crying, irritability, severe sleep loss, or statements like “I can’t take it anymore,” and seek professional help immediately.
WHO estimates 13% of new mothers experience depression globally, 20% in developing countries. An India review of over 20,000 women put it at 22%.
Her advice to families: provide food, rest, sleep and non-judgmental company, share childcare equally, and avoid dismissive remarks. For mothers: ask for help without guilt and make time for yourself.
