Farmers honoured for protecting sarus cranes in Maharajganj
Uttar Pradesh: Farmers and local volunteers in Maharajganj district are being recognised for their efforts in protecting the Sarus crane and its wetland habitats. A felicitation ceremony was held on World Wetlands Day 2026 to honour these conservation champions.
The initiative is part of the Sarus Habitat Securement Project, implemented by the Sohagibarwa Wildlife Division and the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), with support from the Sarus Sanrakshan Samiti, Lucknow.
Farmers, fishermen, and local volunteers, known as Sarus Mitras, are working together to monitor nests, safeguard eggs, and protect breeding sites. Their efforts are crucial in conserving the Sarus crane and its habitat. The project highlights the importance of community-led conservation and the role of local communities in protecting India’s natural heritage.
The ceremony recognised the dedication and commitment of these grassroots conservationists, inspiring others to join the effort to protect India’s wildlife.
