Famous ‘Neanderthal-Human Hybrid’ fossil found to be much younger, new study shows

Berlin: A fossil once thought to be evidence of Neanderthal and modern human interbreeding is rewriting its own story, thanks to new dating technology.

The Hahnöfersand frontal bone, discovered in Germany in 1973, was originally dated to 36,000 years ago. Early descriptions suggested its robust shape meant the individual was a hybrid between a Neanderthal and a modern human.

Now, researchers have reevaluated the fossil using newer dating methods. The results show the bone is far younger than first believed, originating only about 7,500 years ago during the Mesolithic period.

The finding highlights how advances in science continue to refine our understanding of human history. While the fossil no longer represents a Neanderthal-modern human mix, it remains an important piece of Europe’s Mesolithic record.

The study shows how improved technology helps scientists build a more accurate picture of the past, replacing earlier assumptions with clearer evidence.
