Early H. pylori eradication key to preventing gastric cancer: Nobel laureate Barry Marshall

Thiruvananthapuram: Early eradication of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection could be a crucial strategy for preventing gastric cancer, Nobel laureate and gastroenterologist Dr. Barry Marshall said.

Dr. Marshall stressed the need for wider testing, appropriate treatment and confirmation that the infection has been fully cleared.

Speaking on the burden of H. pylori-related diseases, Dr. Marshall said the bacterium should no longer be regarded only as a cause of ulcers.

Dr. Marshall shared the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Dr. Robin Warren for their discovery of the bacterium H. pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease, a finding that revolutionized the understanding and treatment of stomach disorders.
