Drama begins at hello: Kuchipudi program revisits power of character intros

Chennai: With regal confidence, Satyabhama swept onto the stage, proclaiming her radiance, grace, and cherished place in Krishna’s heart. In moments, the entrance set the emotional intensity that defines her — and opened the archway into the drama itself.

That moment anchored a recent presentation by Madhavapeddi Murthy and disciples of the Siva Foundation at Spaces, Chennai. The program explored ‘Patra Praveshas’ — character-entry pieces — in the Kuchipudi repertoire, bringing together several iconic compositions.

Character-entry songs hold a significant place in Indian performance traditions. While Sanskrit drama emphasizes pravesa and the Natyashastra outlines dhruva songs for dramatic junctures, Kuchipudi’s Patra Pravesha Daruvu fuses these roles: introducing the character, establishing mood and identity, and showcasing the performer’s command of abhinaya, rhythm, and stage presence.

Murthy’s curation traced that lineage, using each entry to frame the persona before the narrative unfolds. The evening highlighted how these pieces serve as both gateway and showcase — a compact burst of story, emotion, and technique that sets the tone for the entire act.

The Siva Foundation disciples performed a selection of classic entries, underscoring the form’s continued vitality in contemporary Kuchipudi.
