Delhi Govt to launch solar-powered ‘cooling hut’ in Shalimar Bagh
New Delhi: Delhi government is set to launch a solar-powered public cooling structure in northwest Delhi as a pilot project to help residents beat the scorching summer heat.
The facility, designed like a small hut, is under construction in Shalimar Bagh and is expected to be completed by end of May. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will inaugurate it in the first week of June, an official said.
The hut will use traditional khus grass padding on all sides along with a mist-based sprinkler system to create a natural cooling effect for people resting inside. Solar panels on the roof will power the facility, making it energy-efficient.
Visitors will also get seating, cold drinking water dispensers and mobile charging sockets. “The idea is to create a public cooling zone where people exposed to heat can get relief from high temperatures,” the official said.
If the pilot succeeds, the government plans to set up more such shaded resting spaces with mist cooling across the city.
