Delhi Foundation recycles 1,000 kg hair into mats, Cuts Yamuna pollution by 40%

New Delhi: Rahul Gupta’s Kesakambali Foundation is transforming donated human hair into oil-absorbing mats that intercept pollutants before they reach the Yamuna. The initiative has recycled over 1,000 kg of hair, reduced key pollution indicators by nearly 40%, and created a zero-waste cleanup model.

Human hair can absorb oil up to nine times its own weight. Recognising this potential, the Foundation began collecting donated hair and converting it into specially designed mats.

The idea may sound unusual, but the science behind it is surprisingly simple and effective. It is part of a unique effort to tackle water pollution.

The initiative reflects a wider trend across India, where people are finding unexpected ways to solve everyday problems. Innovation has no finish line, with examples ranging from turning agricultural waste into eco-friendly products to transforming discarded materials into tools for environmental conservation
