Critically endangered lemur triplets born at Georgia Theme Park
Valdosta: A critically endangered red-ruffed lemur pair has welcomed triplets at Wild Adventures Theme Park in Valdosta, Georgia, marking the third consecutive year the resident female has given birth.
Taylor, Red, and Marjorie were born April 25 to parents Val and Doug. The couple has produced a litter each year since 2023. The triplets are now living with siblings Swiper, Raven, Beans, and Dennis.
The births highlight the role of captive breeding programs for the species, which the IUCN lists as Critically Endangered. An estimated 10,000 red-ruffed lemurs remain in the wild, confined to rapidly disappearing forests at the northern tip of Madagascar.
At 9.5 pounds, the red-ruffed lemur is one of the largest living lemurs and the world’s largest pollinator. It feeds on fruit and nectar, transferring pollen with its fuzzy nose. The species is also one of the most fecund lemurs, capable of litters of up to six. It is the only diurnal primate that stows infants in nests while foraging.
About 590 red-ruffed lemurs live in captivity worldwide. Successful breeding pairs like Val and Doug help maintain a safeguard population if wild habitats can be preserved.
“Very soon guests will be able to see Taylor, Red, and Marjorie, alongside their parents in their habitat located near the Giraffe Overlook,” said Asher Raymond, a spokesman for the park.
