Coal India sees no supply crunch as power demand peaks

State-owned Coal India said domestic thermal power plants have adequate coal stocks to meet rising electricity demand during peak summer.

As of Saturday, May 23, thermal plants held 47.6 million tonnes of coal, enough for 19 days of consumption, the miner said.

The overall stock buffer stands at about 168 million tonnes, Coal India added. This includes coal at power plants, coal extracted and available for dispatch, stocks in-transit, and stocks ready for transit.

The assurance comes as power demand climbs across the country due to intense summer heat. Coal-fired plants account for the bulk of India’s electricity generation.

Coal India said it is monitoring supply to ensure uninterrupted fuel availability for the power sector during the high-demand period.
