Bonobo’s “tea party” hints apes can imagine too

Turns out imagination isn’t unique to humans. A new series of experiments shows that Kanzi, a language-trained bonobo, can tell real objects from fake ones and join in pretend play.

Scientists tested this by sitting down for a “tea party” with Kanzi. They watched how the ape reacted to make-believe scenarios. Kanzi didn’t treat the pretend items as real. Instead, he engaged with them as if they were part of a game.

The results suggest apes might share the human ability to imagine. For years, scientists thought pretend play was a uniquely human skill. Kanzi’s actions challenge that idea.

Now researchers plan to expand the work. They’ll run similar tests on other apes, including those that haven’t been trained in language, to see how widespread imagination is among primates.

The findings add to growing evidence that the cognitive gap between humans and apes may be smaller than we once believed.
