Auroville to Hyderabad: How Ahilya’s Reels opened doors to films

Growing up in Auroville, Ahilya’s world revolved around a tight-knit community of roughly 3,000 people. Her life changed when Instagram introduced Reels.

She began posting short videos offering glimpses into her daily life and the experimental township. What started as casual posts quickly gained traction.“I did it for fun. The content became popular and I enjoyed interacting with people. I never imagined it would lead to film offers,” she says with a laugh, while promoting her new film in Hyderabad.

The visibility from Reels translated into cinema opportunities. Ahilya made her debut in I Want To Talk, marking her first step into films. She now has a role in Sing Geetham, where she got the chance to collaborate with veteran filmmaker Singeetham Srinivasa Rao.

The shift from creating content for a niche online audience to working with an acclaimed director highlights how short-form video is reshaping discovery for new talent. For Ahilya, the journey from Auroville’s 3,000-strong community to film sets has been as unconventional as the township she grew up in.
