At 62 she started a craft studio; Now it’s a refuge for women of all ages

Pune: At Creator’s Hands Craft Room in Pune, teenagers, working professionals, retirees and grandmothers gather weekly to crochet, embroider and quilt.

Founded in July 2025 by 62-year-old Rhoda Gaikwad Staneley, the small studio has welcomed over 100 participants in less than a year. Classes are kept intimate, with 4-8 people, and focus on process over perfection.

For Rhoda, it’s the result of 40 years in social work. After decades abroad, she returned to India and noticed many women felt isolated and disconnected from hands-on skills.

“I think I discovered myself,” says Raashi Nachnani, 43, who joined to support her daughter. “It showed me a creative side which I never thought I had. This has calmed me down so much.”

Retired teacher Shweta, 64, calls it therapeutic: “Every stitch you make gives you a kind of happiness. It is never too late to learn.”

Beyond teaching crafts, the room aims to rebuild community — a space to slow down, talk, and create together, away from screens and daily stress.

As Rhoda puts it, people leave with more than handmade pieces. “They leave with something they rediscovered within themselves.”
