Blueprint for India’s next energy transition: electrifying industrial heat
India’s next phase of energy transition will focus on electrifying industrial heat, with a push to scale adoption across the country’s MSMEs to strengthen manufacturing competitiveness, energy security and decarbonisation.
That’s the central argument in a new blueprint released on Sunday, which calls for a coordinated approach involving innovative financing, skilled workers, demonstration projects and cluster-level planning.
India has already mainstreamed renewable-powered electrification in several sectors. Electric mobility is replacing internal combustion engines, agriculture is shifting to solar irrigation, and buildings are adopting smarter appliances. Experts say the next big opportunity lies in industrial heat, which remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels.
The report draws parallels with India’s solar photovoltaic revolution, which cut solar tariffs by more than 85% over the past decade. That success, it notes, came from a coordinated ecosystem of supportive national and state policies, competitive markets, institutional mandates, and sustained private investment.
A similar model is now needed for industrial heat electrification. Key enablers identified include affordable and reliable renewable electricity supply, financing mechanisms tailored for MSMEs, workforce training, and pilot projects to prove technology at scale.
Authors Vrinda Gupta and Srinivas Ethiraj argue that planning at the industrial cluster level will be critical to drive adoption and keep manufacturing globally competitive while cutting emissions.
