Previously unknown alloy discovered in Hiroshima bomb debris
Researchers have discovered a previously unknown metal alloy created by the atomic bomb blast in Hiroshima in 1945.
The alloy was found inside tiny, glass-like beads called hiroshimaites, recovered from the beach sands of Hiroshima Bay. The beads formed when the bomb’s intense heat vaporized building materials, soil, and metals, which then cooled and solidified as they fell back to earth.
When scientists examined the beads, they found a micrometer-sized metallic grain embedded in the glass. The grain was a complex mix of iron, chromium, nickel, manganese, molybdenum, silicon, and aluminium, with a unique crystal structure.
The alloy shares characteristics with other unusual high-entropy alloys and quasicrystals. These materials are of great interest to engineers for their strength and stability. The finding offers new insight into the extreme conditions created by the blast, and could inform future materials research.
