Killai becomes Tamil Nadu’s first fully operational climate-resilient village
Cuddalore: Killai, a coastal village in Cuddalore district, has been declared Tamil Nadu’s first fully operational Climate Resilient Village (CRV). The announcement was made on July 22 under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission (TNCCM) of the Department of Environment and Climate Change.
The project set out to transform a climate-vulnerable settlement into a working model. Killai had long faced threats including cyclones, sea-level rise, saline intrusion, coastal erosion, and biodiversity loss. The new interventions now address these risks together.
Several changes are already visible in daily life. A solar-powered e-boat cruises through the mangrove creeks of Pichavaram near Killai. In the same ecosystem, villagers have taken up scientific beekeeping, producing honey as a sustainable livelihood.
Government buildings in the village have also been upgraded with hybrid solar power systems to reduce electricity consumption. At the same time, the Buckingham Canal has been desilted, improving water flow and strengthening the health of the local ecosystem.
Officials said the Killai model is built on three pillars: ecosystem restoration, renewable energy adoption, and community-led action. The idea is to combine natural solutions like mangrove conservation with clean energy and local participation to build long-term resilience.
With the project now fully operational, TNCCM plans to use Killai as a demonstration site. Data and lessons from the village will be used to replicate similar climate-resilience models in other coastal areas of Tamil Nadu.
