Studyfinds significant smooth-coated otter population in Mettur dam, Cauvery stretch
Salem: A new study by the Department of Zoology and Wildlife Biology of A.V.C. College, Mayiladuthurai has found evidence of a significant population of smooth-coated otters in the Mettur Dam and Cauvery river stretches of Salem district.
Based on the findings, researchers are urging authorities to declare the area a protected freshwater habitat to safeguard the species and its ecosystem.
The study is being carried out with financial assistance from the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and under the guidance of A. Udhayan, director of the Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC), Vandalur.
According to the researchers, the project focuses on smooth-coated otter population assessment, habitat improvement, and conservation measures not just in Mettur Dam but also in other major freshwater ecosystems in the region.
Smooth-coated otters are indicator species for healthy river systems. Their presence in Mettur and the Cauvery points to relatively good water quality and prey availability, researchers noted.
The team has recommended habitat protection, reduced human disturbance along riverbanks, and community awareness programs as immediate steps.
Officials said the data from the study will be used to formulate long-term conservation plans for freshwater wildlife in the district.
