Bondada bags NTPC REL order for 100 MWh vanadium battery storage project at Khavda

Hyderabad: Bondada Engineering has secured an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from NTPC Renewable Energy (NTPC REL) to develop a 100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS) at Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat.

Delectrik Systems will be the technology partner for the project. The project is designed to support integration of renewable energy into the national grid. It will use VRFB technology, which Bondada said offers several advantages over conventional lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery systems.

According to the company, the technology aligns with India’s vision of strengthening energy security by reducing long-term dependence on imported cells. This will be done through the utilisation of domestic vanadium resources or imports from diverse sources.

The NTPC REL order also includes 10 years of operations and maintenance for the storage system. VRFB systems use liquid electrolytes stored in external tanks, making them suitable for long-duration storage and giving them a longer lifecycle compared to LFP batteries. The Khavda project is expected to help manage intermittency from solar power and improve grid stability.

With this win, Bondada adds a large-scale flow battery project to its portfolio as India pushes to scale up storage capacity alongside renewable energy expansion.
