Delhi teacher runs free roadside school for street children in Sheikh Sarai

On a pavement in Sheikh Sarai, Delhi government teacher Krishna Kumar runs an evening class for 50-60 children who once spent their days begging.

Originally from Rajasthan, Krishna dropped out of school as a child due to financial hardship. He later became a teacher and started teaching one little girl he met on the street. That single student grew into a full roadside classroom.

After classes end at his government school, Krishna teaches for free, provides books and clothes from his own pocket, and mentors children toward a different future. Many students have now left street begging behind.

When The Better India shared his story, it reached 1.3 million people. Support poured in from across India — Kerala to Haryana — bringing ration kits, study material, and tents for families.

The response has also helped expand his work to food drives, tree planting, and women’s safety initiatives.

Krishna says the biggest support has been moral: “I’m no longer carrying this dream alone.” His goal now is to build a permanent school so every child can learn safely and with dignity.
