Colorado researchers say new therapy can reverse osteoarthritis in weeks

Scientists at CU Boulder, CSU and CU Anschutz have developed regenerative osteoarthritis treatments that repaired damaged joints in animal studies within 4-8 weeks.

The $30M ARPA-H NITRO program project includes two therapies: a single injection of an FDA-approved drug delivered via a new particle system, and a biomaterial “repair kit” of engineered proteins that recruits the body’s own cells to regrow cartilage and bone.

Lead researcher Stephanie Bryant said the aim is to “end this disease,” not just treat pain. In animals, joints returned to healthy condition. In human cells from joint replacement patients, the therapies showed regenerative effects.

With no cure currently available, most patients face painkillers or joint replacement surgery. Researchers hope this could offer an affordable, in-office alternative.

The team will publish findings later this year and has launched a company. Clinical trials could start in 18 months if next-phase work succeeds.
