BSNL has launched a satellite phone in India priced at ₹1,34,166 apiece, inclusive of taxes, the state-run telecom company announced on Thursday.
According to a social media post, the device is built for tough conditions and provides voice calls and SMS in locations where regular mobile networks don’t reach.
The launch is part of BSNL’s plan to expand satellite communication services, with a focus on defence forces, maritime operators, and disaster-response teams. Such users often need connectivity in remote regions, at sea, or during emergencies when ground infrastructure fails.
Unlike regular smartphones, satellite phones connect directly to satellites, ensuring coverage in mountains, oceans, and disaster zones.
BSNL’s entry into satellite handsets signals growing interest in satellite-based services in India. The government has been pushing to improve communication in border and remote areas, while private companies are also preparing to offer satellite internet and voice services.
