New hope for kidney patients without diabetes: Finerenone shows promise in studies

New Delhi: A drug earlier used mainly for diabetes-related kidney disease may now help many more patients.

Three global studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, and The Lancet suggest that finerenone can help slow chronic kidney disease in patients without diabetes.

In chronic kidney disease, kidneys gradually lose the ability to filter waste from blood. While diabetes is a leading cause, many people develop it due to high blood pressure, autoimmune disorders, or other conditions that damage the kidney’s filtering units.

Currently, doctors use medicines that lower blood pressure and newer drugs that lower blood sugar to reduce strain on kidneys. But many patients still lose kidney function over time and eventually need dialysis.

Researchers say finerenone could fill that gap by offering an additional treatment to delay kidney failure in a broader group of patients.

The findings, published this week, point to finerenone as a potential new option beyond diabetes care — bringing hope to millions living with non-diabetic kidney disease.
