‘Minions & Monsters’ takes Illumination’s yellow crew to 1920s Hollywood
Minions & Monsters, the third film in the Despicable Me prequel series, released on July 3, 2026, is being described as a “yellow-blue love letter to old Hollywood.”
The movie takes the franchise’s eternally sporting henchmen to 1920s Hollywood, where they unleash their signature brand of chaotic fun.
According to reviewer Mini Anthikad Chhibber, one of the film’s standout moments features George Lucas trapped inside a glass coffee cup exhibit, “begging to be let off” — a gag called “silly-smart” and “giggle-snort-inducing.”
The story is framed through a film history tour led by guide Olivia, voiced by Allison Janney. When visitors show no knowledge of “James and Henry,” Olivia recounts how these goggle-eyed yellow creatures “ruled, ruined and raised Hollywood.”
Produced by Illumination, the film blends slapstick comedy with nods to cinema history, positioning the Minions at the center of early Hollywood lore.
