Wheat procurement rises 17% to 35 MT in 2026-27, exceeds Target: Govt

New Delhi: The government’s wheat procurement for the 2026-27 rabi marketing season has risen 17% year-on-year to cross 35 million tonne, surpassing both the official target and last year’s total, a senior food ministry official said on Wednesday.

“Wheat procurement has crossed 35 million tonne so far this season. We have exceeded the target,” the official told PTI. The Centre had set a procurement target of 34.5 million tonne for the current season. The figure also tops the 30 million tonne procured during the 2025-26 rabi marketing season.

“Procurement in major producing states has been completed,” the official added, indicating that the bulk of the buying operations is now over.

The rabi marketing season runs from April to March, with most wheat procurement done between April and June. Higher procurement helps build central foodgrain stocks for distribution under the Public Distribution System and other welfare schemes.
