Construction’s future must be green, high-performing, and cost-competitive

Mumbai: The future of construction will depend on solutions that are green and sustainable, but also performance-driven and cost-competitive enough for real market adoption, said L.P. Singh, Director General of the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB).

Singh was speaking at World of Concrete India 2026, an industry event organised by Informa Markets in Mumbai.

He noted that India’s construction sector is set for unprecedented growth. Cement production is expected to rise from nearly 500 million tonnes today to around 2,800 million tonnes by 2070.

“As this growth accelerates, sustainability, decarbonisation, and indigenous development of construction materials must move in parallel,” Singh said.

The comments come as the industry faces pressure to balance rapid infrastructure demand with climate targets. Singh emphasized that green solutions will only scale if they match conventional materials on performance and cost.
