Barn swallows at Kadem Reservoir act as natural pest control for farmers

Nirmal: Hundreds of barn swallows nesting at the Mission Bhagiratha pump house near Kadem Reservoir are helping farmers by feeding on mosquitoes, flies and other aerial insects.

Dr Venkat Anagandhula, north Telangana coordinator of HyTiCoS, identified the large colony of insectivorous birds beneath the elevated concrete structures of the pump house in Nirmal district. The birds have built hundreds of mud nests clustered along vertical surfaces.

Dr Venkat said the nesting aggregation was unusually large and showed the site provided ideal breeding and shelter conditions. The birds display a highly organized lifestyle, with nests packed close together on the concrete.

Barn swallows are known for aerial agility and nest-building skill. They form cup-shaped nests from wet mud pellets mixed with grass fibers, feathers and plant material. The birds carry each piece in their beaks and attach it firmly to concrete, creating durable nests that withstand rain, wind, vibrations and human activity.

Researchers note that bridges, culverts and pump houses give the species several advantages. Elevated concrete structures keep predators like snakes, rodents and feral cats away. The shade provides thermal stability during harsh summer heat. Sheltered conditions improve nesting success and chick survival.

Dr Venkat said the colony reflects the species’ exceptional adaptability to human-modified landscapes. Their continued presence also points to a healthy feeding habitat around Kadem Reservoir.

Ecologists consider barn swallows beneficial because they naturally control insect populations in agricultural and human-dominated areas. Their coexistence with modern infrastructure is seen as a sign of ecological balance and adaptability.
