Study: Barn swallows in Manipur may be giving up migration

Imphal: Barn swallows in Manipur may be shedding their migratory behavior, a new study has found, challenging the long-held view that the fork-tailed birds are seasonal visitors from colder northern climates.

Researchers studying local populations observed year-round presence and breeding activity, suggesting some groups have become resident rather than migratory. The findings indicate that parts of the northeastern region may now host stable, non-migratory barn swallow populations.

Traditionally, barn swallows have been documented arriving in Northeast India during winter months from breeding grounds in Central Asia, Siberia, and northern China. The study notes that changes in climate, food availability, and urbanization could be influencing the shift in behavior.

Scientists say more tracking and genetic data is needed to confirm whether the birds are truly abandoning migration or if resident and migratory groups are coexisting.
