Assam ships first legal agarwood export to Saudi Arabia, UAE in ₹2.35 crore deal

Guwahati: Assam recorded a major milestone in its agro-forest economy on Wednesday with the first legally approved export of agarwood chips to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The consignment was dispatched from the cargo terminal of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. It included 100 kg of agarwood chips for Saudi Arabia and 12 kg for the UAE. The total shipment was valued at ₹2.35 crore.

Officials said the export opens a new chapter for an industry with strong global demand and high revenue potential. Agarwood, used in perfumes and incense, commands premium prices in Middle Eastern markets.

The legal export marks a shift for Assam’s agarwood sector, which has long faced challenges with regulation and illegal trade. State officials expect the move to boost farmer incomes and expand the agro-forestry economy.
