National Technology Day: PM Modi says Pokhran tests showcased India’s scientific excellence

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday greeted the nation on the occasion of National Technology Day, commemorating the anniversary of India’s landmark Pokhran nuclear tests conducted in 1998. He said the historic achievement reflected India’s scientific excellence and its unwavering commitment to technological advancement.

National Technology Day is observed every year on May 11 to mark the successful nuclear tests carried out at the Pokhran test range in Rajasthan on May 11 and 13, 1998. During the operation, India conducted five nuclear tests involving advanced weapon designs, a milestone that established the country as a nuclear power and marked a defining moment in its scientific and strategic history.

In his message, Prime Minister Modi noted that the achievement demonstrated the capability and determination of Indian scientists and researchers. He added that technology has since become a key pillar in India’s journey toward becoming a self-reliant nation, playing a crucial role in driving innovation, economic growth, and national security.

“The landmark moment in 1998 reflected India’s scientific excellence and unwavering commitment. Today, technology continues to shape our vision of an Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” the Prime Minister said.

The Pokhran-II tests, conducted under the leadership of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, were carried out by a team of distinguished scientists, including former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The successful tests remain one of the most significant milestones in India’s technological and strategic progress.

National Technology Day also serves as an occasion to recognise the contributions of scientists, engineers, innovators, and researchers whose work continues to strengthen India’s position as a global technology leader.
