Electric car sales in India jump 75% in April, Tata Motors leads market

New Delhi: Electric passenger vehicle sales in India surged 75.14% in April 2026 to 23,506 units, up from 13,421 units in the same month last year, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said Wednesday.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. retained its lead in the segment. The company sold 8,543 units in April, compared with 4,822 units a year earlier, marking a 77.17% jump, according to FADA data.

The sharp rise comes as more buyers opt for electric models amid expanding charging networks and new launches across price bands. FADA’s monthly retail data tracks actual sales at dealerships.

April’s performance builds on the broader momentum for EVs in India’s passenger vehicle market, with Tata Motors accounting for over 36% of total electric car sales for the month.

Industry watchers say sustained growth will hinge on model availability, financing options, and charging infrastructure in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
