Iran to restart domestic flights, plans phased reopening of airspace

New Delhi: Iran will resume domestic flight operations from Wednesday, April 22, as part of a phased reopening of its airspace, Iranian government sources told The Hindu.

Contingent on progress in U.S.-Iran diplomatic talks, Iran’s aviation safety regulator has outlined a plan to first reallow overflight operations. The move will bring major relief to international airlines connecting Europe with Asia, including Indian carriers that have faced longer routes and higher costs due to airspace restrictions.

The resumption of domestic services marks the first step in normalising air traffic. Officials said reopening overflights is a priority to restore key international air corridors through Iranian airspace.

The phased approach signals a positive shift for global aviation and could ease travel and cargo movement across the region in the coming weeks.
