As heatwaves intensify, Ahmedabad’s Heat Action Plan offers blueprint for cities
Ahmedabad: In a city where summers can turn relentless, Ahmedabad chose preparation over reaction and built India’s first Heat Action Plan, a model now guiding how cities respond to extreme heat.
Rising temperatures had shifted from uncomfortable to deadly. Rather than address the problem year after year, the city partnered with experts to design a coordinated response focused on prevention, early warning, and care.
At the heart of the plan is preparedness. Hospitals introduced dedicated heat wards to treat patients suffering from heat stroke, dehydration, and rashes. Doctors and medical staff were trained to identify and respond quickly to heat related illnesses, ensuring timely care.
The plan also rolled out cool roofs to lower indoor temperatures, issued early warnings to residents ahead of heat spikes, and expanded community outreach to share simple safety steps. Together, these measures created a system that alerts, protects, and treats.
By combining public health readiness with low cost interventions and clear communication, Ahmedabad showed how simple, coordinated steps can save lives during extreme heat. The city’s approach now serves as a practical blueprint for others facing hotter summers.
