Indoor saffron farming revolutionizes agriculture in India

Indoor saffron farming is revolutionizing agriculture in India, with entrepreneurs like Asthika and Shankar Narula from Ludhiana, Punjab, growing authentic Kashmiri saffron using aeroponics. This innovative approach allows for year-round production, unaffected by seasonal changes or weather conditions, in a climate-controlled room.

The Narulas’ venture, Grow Grower, has produced around 1.3 kg of saffron, generating approximately Rs 17 lakh in revenue, largely through exports. The facility uses aeroponic technology, where plants grow in air or mist without soil, and every environmental factor is controlled.

Saffron is one of the most expensive spices globally, and its demand is rising. However, traditional farming faces challenges like climate change and land scarcity. Indoor aeroponic farming offers a sustainable solution, using up to 90% less water and fewer chemicals.

Grow Grower has built a network of 30 partner farms across India, enabling them to aggregate production and cater to larger global demand. The Narulas aim to make India a leader in saffron production and increase accessibility.
